Bowen Neurostructural Integration Technique is a long established practise of soft tissue osteopathic- style therapy that we frequently incorporate into our therapy programmes at Anatomy Physical Therapy (APT). Bowen is a broad-spectrum therapy and is particularly useful in treating acute pain which initially requires a ‘light touch’ approach.
What is Bowen Neurostructural Integration Technique?
In the late 1950s, an Australian Osteopath, Tom Bowen, discovered that unusual relationships existed between certain health complaints and particular patterns of muscular dysfunction in patients.
This observation led to many years of intense clinical research, which ultimately resulted in the development of a unique system of myofascial stimulation, which brought about long term corrections to the unusual patterns of muscular dysfunction and the corresponding health complaints in his patients.
Bowen Therapy is considered by many to be the world’s leading technique in structural and spinal therapy for lasting pain removal and rejuvenation. It is a remarkably effective professional bodywork technique, that when applied, initiates a process of natural auto-regulation to occur in the spinal column and consequently throughout the whole body. The resultant effect of this is a rapid elimination or reduction of symptoms, followed by an increase in energy and an unmistakable sense of well being.
Bowen Therapy is essentially a soft tissue osteopathic-style therapy, designed to remove pain, physiological dysfunction and even psychological imbalances by restoring the structural integrity of the body. The therapy consists of rolling moves over muscle and connective tissue using light touch, and is only applied briefly at precise points on the body.
It is reasonable to state that Bowen Therapy once applied creates a powerful context for change to take place in the musculoskeletal and visceral systems via what can only be described as a specific decoding of the nervous system and a comprehensive resetting of the body.
As Bowen Therapy simply creates a context for the natural process of auto-regulation to occur, it can be therefore safely applied to any condition the human body is capable of manifesting. This is not to say that every condition will respond in the same way. Advanced degenerative conditions often require a multifaceted approach, of which Bowen Therapy may form an exceedingly significant part.
What to expect from Bowen Therapy at Anatomy Physical Therapy
Following a detailed consultation with the patient, a trained Bowen Therapist at APT will develop a programme that best suits your needs.
A treatment comprises of the application of sequences of specialized ‘moves’ to your body, carried out in a very specific and systematic manner. Characteristically, skilful soft tissue manipulation is applied to the lower and upper back, abdomen, neck, arms and legs.
There is no forceful manipulation, rather a cross-fibre manoeuvring of muscle, tendon, ligament or nerve, using varying pressure and incorporating resting periods to allow your body to respond. Treatment can be done either through clothing or directly on the skin.
Throughout the session you will experience deep relaxation, essentially providing your body with a “window of opportunity” to reorganise itself via the natural activation of various neural reflexes and important regulatory systems.
Substantial relief is frequently attained after the first session; however long term resolution is typically attained after a number of sessions.
